Nerf Roundup: Part 1

I have been collecting Ner f stuff with a passion for the last year or so - I thought I might post a review of my current collection for anyone who is interested.

The Maverick was my first Nerf weapon and remains one of my favourites. It can fire 6 darts of any variety from its revolving chamber and is highly accurate.

Because the tactical rail is on the cocking mechanism, it is cumbersome to add rail accessories - it is at its best as is.

The cocking mechanism is located at the rear of the gun, so it can't be fired one-handed like the Barricade, but it is a solid and inexpensive way to enter the Nerf world.

Best usage: Sidearm - you can load it with any type of dart so it is well suited to close hectic battles when all your clips are gone.

The Longshot is a very impressive faux-sniper rifle, with a sturdy built in stand. One of its notable features is the secondary gun that doubles as an extended barrel. Is this useful? No. The second gun is front-loading and takes one dart, and the extended barrel adds nothing to the range or accuracy.

This is an imposing gun to see on the battlefield, and the loud noise of the bolt-action should strike fear into your opponents. Unfortunately the range is pretty poor, and it functions better as an assault rifle.

Best usage: Ditch the front gun and replace it with the Recon barrel. It looks better, is lighter, and makes no other impact to usage. It is a bit more fun with the 18-dart clip from the Stampede.

Speaking of which... the Stampede is without a doubt my favourite item in the Nerf catalogue. Why? It is fully automatic, clip-loading, perfectly balanced and MASSIVE. The rate of fire and range are fantastic and the accuracy is close enough - certainly no worse than any other weapon.

The sense of power when firing off a full clip with this behemoth is incredible.

Best usage: Combine with the Raider 35-dart drum clip and the Recon laser-light. If you see that little red dot heading your way, you will want to run.

The Raider. After experiencing the power of the Stampede, this felt like a bit of a let-down. That said, the pump action allows for a very high rate of fire - probably the highest of any Nerf weapon. The stock is pretty flimsy, so best ditched. The fun part about this gun? Cocking it one-handed like a shotgun. Chik Chik Boom!

Best Usage: No accessories - they will just fall off as it requires some pretty rough handling. Just aim and pump like your life depends on it!

My hold-out gun! The Reflex. This is a tiny one-shot gun that can be holstered in a sock or sleeve or pocket, ready for surprise attacks. Like the Maverick, it takes any type of dart, so when you run out of clips it can be used for foraging while you find a safe place to reload.

Best usage: tucked safely out of sight with one in the chamber. They'll never see it coming.

Next time I will review the Vulcan, Barricade, Recon and some of the non-Nerf BuzzBee items that grace my toybox.
