It's been a while since I discussed my Media Centre tinkerings, but there have definitely been some changes. The project has been moved to a new system, running
Ubuntu 11.04 in Gnome. I have added a DVB receiver and am using Kaffeine as my main PVR software.
I did give MythTV and Me-TV a run. Me-TV has a beautiful interface and is definitely a program I will keep an eye on in the future, but it proved to be pretty unstable and crashed a few too many times. Myth TV proved to be a bit excessive for my needs, as I like to be fiddling around with my music and torrents while watching TV.
I have never really been an Ubuntu fan - have been using Mandriva since Mandrake 9. But The latest version of Mandriva, and even the new offshoot Mageia were proving to be pretty unstable. I gave Ubuntu a spin and for the first time it impressed me.
I know Unity has received a lot of flack, but it is a fantastic interface for a TV based media centre. It proved easy and speedy to use, either from the couch or up close. Sadly some glitches occurred when I installed a new video card but I hope to get these ironed out when I get some time. Gnome is doing the job for now but I really do miss Unity!
I shall give an update again when things are more finalised with some specs and pictures.
